The Emerald Tablets of Thoth (EToT) is a short book, which can easily be found on the internet in electronic form. The tablets were supposedly written by the Atlantean Priest-King/ Egyptian God Thoth almost 40,000 years ago. They were translated and published by Dr. Doreal in 1920s or 30s. There is another Emerald Tablet, or Emerald Tablet of Hermes, (I’ll call it the other tablet) which is attributed to Hermes Trismegistus and Thoth. There doesn’t seem to be any relation between the tablets except both are connected to Thoth.
I read the EToT a few months ago and found the story intriguing at least, even if I doubt their historicity greatly. The other tablet is 14 sentences long so anyone can read it in a few minutes. The other tablet was apparently translated by Isaac Newton, among others, into English. Wikipedia states the earliest version of the text that has been discovered is in an Arabic book written in the eight century. There is of course no trace of the actual tablet if it ever existed, but we can at least say that the other tablet is old, seems to contain alchemical ideas. Whereas the Emerald Tablets of Thoth looks like it was written in the 1990s or 2000s.
Despite the claims the Emerald Tablets were translated by Dr. Doreal almost hundred years ago I haven’t found any evidence of these early translations. Amazon says the publication date is June 1st, 2006. The Tablets seem to be older than that though. Using the Wayback Machine, a website you can use to access old internet pages, I found out the Tablets were on the Crystalinks.com site already in 1998-1999. Maybe the Emerald Tablets of Thoth was written and published already in 1930s, but I sure haven’t found the proof. Dr. Doreal seems to have written The Four Planes of Healing – A Guide for Metaphysical Healers in 1938, and he had founded a society called Brotherhood of the White Temple in the 1930s. That still doesn’t prove that he actually wrote/ translated the Tablets back then. Somebody might just be using his name to make the book seem more mysterious.
According to the internet “The Tablets of Thoth are imperishable, resistant to all elements, corrosion and acids.” However I’ve yet to find any evidence that the tablets actually exist. No-one has said where they are. If in fact they are as old and indestructible as they claim, wouldn’t you think they’d be in some museum or research center? Nor have I come across any claims that the Illuminati, the Vatican or any other faction is keeping them away from the public. How can they know the tablets are so imperishable if no-one has seen them? You can do a picture search on Google and see all sorts of emerald tablets, but there is little to suggest any of them are a photo of these particular 12 tablets.
The EToT are a part of some New Agey spiritual beliefs. You can find some videos on Youtube praising them. A few books are written based on them. Drunvalo Melchizedek, who is supposedly Thoth reborn, inherited his wisdom or something, claims these tablets have a 100 different levels to them and the experience you get from reading them depends on your spiritual attunement, or something. At least I think he is talking about these tablets, and not some other ones.
While I have doubts about their ancient background and true spiritual value, I do consider the Tablets worth reading at least. They can be a bit tedious at times, such as repeating the cliché of seeking the light and staying away from darkness. One interesting bit that has been noted elsewhere on the internet is the reference to reptilians:
“In the form of man they amongst us,
but only to sight were they as are men.
Serpent-headed when the glamour was lifted
but appearing to man as men among men.
Crept they into the Councils,
taking forms that were like unto men.”
If the book was written a hundred years ago or even thousands of years ago, this passage is quite interesting. If the book is only 15-20 years old, it is less so. It is also stated the serpent people were of “another vibration”, which is a concept that sounds quite modern. There are also mentions of spaceships. Again in a modern book they would only hint that someone has seen a few sci-fi movies, but even a hundred years ago such claims would have been quite unorthodox.
I’m not writing this article to “debunk” the Emerald Tablets of Thoth. I merely want to highlight something that many other people seem to be interested in, I included, and give my impression of it. Even if the book was written within my lifetime does not automatically mean it is a hoax or an evil conspiracy to feed New Age lies to the people. That is a possibility of course, but it might also seen as an artwork written by someone interested in mythology, ancient history and spirituality. A sort of protracted epic poem with philosophical and spiritual properties. It might even be genuine, yet currently there is little evidence to support that.
